IN-8 | The Promise: "Will repair the damage done to our national parks by inadequate funding and emphasize the protection and restoration of our National Forests." When/Where: Obama-Biden Plan: "Promoting a Healthy Environment" dated 10/08/08. Source: https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/edg/media/Obama_Cap_and_Trade_0512.pdf Status:In this promise, the Bush Administration preceding President Obama was blamed for inadequately funding the National Park Service (NPS). The last appropriation under President Bush (FY2009) for the NPS was $2.532B. On 10/30/09, President Obama signed into law a bill granting $2.7B to the Department of the Interior for the National Park Service, an increase of $198M over FY2009. The NPS received an additional $750M under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. This increase over previous year/administration funding was a step in the right direction, but still left the National Park Service short of about $9.2B to cover projected infrastructure maintenance/repair requirements, an amount estimated at the time to grow to over $12B by end-CY2016. Here's how NPS funding fared under President Obama: FY2010....$2.744B FY2011....$2.611B FY2012....$2.580B FY2013....$2.775B FY2014....$2.562B FY2015....$2.616B FY2016....$2.852B FY2017....$2.932B Total by end-CY2016: $21.672B This promise was fulfilled. | 1.00 |
